The Szeto-Schiller peptide SS-31, commonly called elamipretide or Bendavid, interacts primarily with CL to impact membrane layer curvature and stop peroxidative damages. It has shown preclinical promise as a therapy for mitochondrial conditions as well as heart failure[1, 2].

This mitochondrial antioxidant peptide has an ability to remove oxidants and increase ATP in mitochondria, thereby preserving the membrane potential of mitochondria (MMP).

In a recent United Kingdom study, researchers also found a correlation between inhibiting neuroinflammation and improving brain functional connectivity (FC) within regions of interest to the hippocampus. In addition, the study demonstrated that the early use of SS-31 Elamipretide, an anti-inflammatory agent, has a long-lasting effect on reducing the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced neuroinflammation [3].
